Abraham Lincoln to Return to Fulton County

Lewistown, IL – At 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at the Illinois State Museum–Dickson Mounds' outdoor stage, Abraham Lincoln, as portrayed Greg Bergschneider, will recall portions of his "Return to the Fountain" speech, which he delivered in Lewistown, Illinois on August 17, 1858. Mr. Lincoln will be joined in this sesquicentennial celebration by some of those also in attendance in 1858, each portrayed by citizens, some of whom are directly related to the original participants.

Mr. Lincoln will arrive by carriage, escorted by a horse-mounted cavalcade. Local horse owners so inclined are invited to participate. Contact Kelvin Sampson at 309-547-3721 if interested in the cavalcade or if you or your family has any information or memorabilia from this historical event.

The celebration will also include a musical performance by well-known local musician Chris Vallillo and a dedication to Mr. Lincoln and Fulton County Civil War Veterans by the Sons of the Union Veterans. Copies of documents describing the original event and letters relating to Mr. Lincoln's trip to Lewistown will be exhibited in the museum.

Outdoor seating is limited, but there is plenty of room, so bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on.

The Illinois State Museum–Dickson Mounds is located between Lewistown and Havana off Illinois Routes 78 and 97. The museum is open free to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day.
