Lewistown Society for
Historical Preservation

While in Lewistown visit our two museums.

Rasmussen Museum

The Rasmussen Blacksmith Shop is an authentic preservation of a turn of the century working shop. Nels Rasmussen an emigrate ttom Denmark started the shop in 1893 on Main Street near the downtown business area of Lewistown. After Nels death the shop was then operated by his son Don until his death in 1969 and was the oldest operating proprietorship owned by the same family in Lewistown. The shop was then acquired by the Society to preserve this part of early craftsmanship. During the operation of the shop buggy making, wheels and as steel wheel were produced along with the horse shoeing and other forge and anvil work. The pulleys and shafts are still overhead that powered the grinders, buffers and other equipment of the shop. The Rasmussen Blacksmith Shop appears today much as it did the last day of operation by the Rasmussen's—an unchanged look at a trade and technology of bygone days.

The Fulton County Narrow Gauge Railroad museum building is the last reminder of this railroad system. The depot is located on the comer of Washington and Jefferson in Lewistown. The narrow gauge railroad ran ttom 1878 to 1905. The route extended for 61 miles ttom Galesburg to West Havana with stops at Levingston, DeLong, London Mills, Oak Mound, Fairview, Bybee, Fiatt, Put Creek, Cuba, Phillips, Lewistown, Sepo and Havana. The site as an added attraction is the home of a caboose which is available for tours.

7 Things Your Boss Should
Never Say to You

News stroy by Karen Burns, U.S.News & World Report
On Wednesday March 24, 2010, 11:24 am EDT

Last week, I listed seven things employees should never say to bosses. A look at the various comment threads shows that a few bosses out there could also benefit from a review of the basics of good workplace relations--not to mention a quickie refresher of what constitutes good leadership.

Go to U.S.News & World Report for the rest of the story.

Fulton County lies in West Central Illinois with its southeastern border bounded for over thirty miles by the Illinois River. Spoon River flows for nearly forty miles in a southeasterly direction from London Mills at the northern boundary of Fulton County to the Illinois River near the crossing point of U.S. Highway 136. Much of Fulton County is farm country and timberland. The many areas of woods and water provide an abundance of outdoor activities including great fishing, hunting hiking, biking skiing, and water sports of all kinds.

Retired Canton Police Officer
Loves New Job but May Have
To Quit Prematurely

Rusty Graham
Rusty Graham of Canton, IL, a former Canton Police Officer, is now in Iraq training the local Iraqis in the Law Enforcement Profession. Officer Graham in his eighth month stationed in Iraq, in not always the best of environments, has not once complained about his living or working conditions. At the disfavor of his family, if they would let him, he would sign up for another tour in August when his contract runs out. The only complaint the retired Police Officer has, is that nowhere in Iraq; not the Kurdish North; nor the Shiite south, not even in the city of 7.5 million, the Capital of Iraq—Baghdad—is there a simple bag of chips called Kitchen Cooked. When asked how he was making it in Iraq Rusty replied, “I only have one complaint; I can take the heat of the desert at midday; dealing with slightly underhanded Chieftains of the many small towns; I can even handle the anxiety of knowing that anyone might be an Insurgent with a gun, but I can’t take not having my Kitchen Cooked Potato Chips!"
